The Perinatal HIV Research Unit

The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU), established in 1996, is one of the largest AIDS research centres in Africa. The early research focus on prevention of mother to child transmission has expanded and PHRU now leads studies on many different aspects of HIV prevention, treatment and care including medical and social research.

PHRU is a research unit of the University of the Witwatersrand, directed by Prof Glenda Gray and Prof James McIntyre. The unit is based in Soweto, South Africa, at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, one of the world's biggest hospitals.

Kganya Motsha

Adolescent Centre

The Kganya Motsha Adolescent Centre is the first of its kind in the country directed to address health needs and counseling for teenagers
between 14 and 19 years of age in the heart of Soweto, Kliptown. The Clinic is supported by USAID and PEPFAR to provide free medical and health services for youth between the ages of 14 and 19 years old. The clinic opened its doors on the 7th of January 2008. Reducing HIV transmission and prevalence rates among youth through education, prevention and treatment strategies is crucial. The Centre provides a safe, friendly and nonjudgmental venue. Staff members who recognize the special needs of teenagers make sure that necessary support and assistance is readily available. The project will work with adolescents to determine the best ways to improve their health care and identify particular issues that increase their vulnerability to HIV.
